International: Inter-American Development Bank

A long-standing initiative of the Latin American countries, the Inter-American Development Bank was established in 1959 as a multilateral finance institution for the development of the region. Its loans and grants help finance sustainable economic and social development projects and support strategies to reduce poverty, expand growth, increase trade, investment and regional integration, and promote private sector development and modernization of the State.

The IDB’s programs and tools became the model on which other regional and subregional multilateral development banks were created. The IDB, the oldest and largest regional bank in the world, is the main source of multilateral financing for economic, social and institutional development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
