Small businesses in Oregon have received 838 SBIR/STTR awards since 1983. These awards total approximately $251 million and have been received by over 200 firms.
According to research conducted by InKnowvation.com, the typical Oregon SBIR/STTR award recipient is employed by a small business with 1–4 employees. Oregon companies have leveraged SBIR/STTR funds to strengthen their small businesses: 8 Oregon firms have gone public and 12 have received venture capital funding.
Over the last six years Oregon small businesses have had a high success rate with HHS-NIH ($65 million), DOD ($31 million), NASA ($28 million), DOE ($7.8 million) and NSF ($4.1 million). Among the smaller agencies, Oregon small businesses have found success with the USDA and the EPA.
Oregon averaged 64 SBIR awards and 5 STTR awards per year between 2000 and 2005. Over the same period Oregon’s SBIR Phase I awards have remained relatively constant even as Phase II awards have increase by more than 50 percent. The state has had increasing success with the STTR program in recent years by quadrupling the number of Phase I awards it receives.
