Premium Color

Meet Virginia Young and Janie Lowe, owners of Yolo Colorhouse and clients of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) of Portland Community College. Artists, designers, entrepreneurs--Young and Lowe manufacture environmentally friendly premium wall finished with their own distinctive color palette based in the colors of nature, and hand-painted, poster-sized samples. Yolo sold 20,000 gallons of paint its first year in business and now concentrates on making Yolo Colorhouse a national brand. The SBDC has been part of their journey each step of the way, advising them on marketing, national distribution, business systems, trademark development and a partnership with manufacturer Rodda Paint. "The small business management classes made me analyze the business and held me accountable to our goals," she says. "The experience of writing a business plan and following through with the plan has brought our business to a whole new level."
