Lights, Camera, and Lots of Action! Months into growing a fledgling casting company, Lana Veenker began looking for a different kind of talent — one that could help her figure out how to keep her small business on track. She found it at a Small Business Development Center class at Portland Community College. “The SBDC class forces you to think about your business and where you are going,” says Veenker.
In addition to the monthly class, she received one-on-one counseling sessions with SBDC’s Director of Education, Jackie Babicky. Veenker calls the sessions “invaluable.” Thanks to Babicky’s advice, she was able to move her business out of her apartment, hire two full-time employees, and purchase a condo.
She also learned how to set up systems and procedures so that her entire operation wasn’t running out of her head. And with more than 90 projects a year, including her casting work with such movies as “Twilight,” “Feast of Love,” and “Untraceable,” as well as the TNT series “Leverage,” giving her now thriving business room to grow is an essential part of the script.
