Crabby Cakes Bakery achieves the vision of 2 people with a passion for producing the best pastries, with the best customer service, to our local community and visitors from around the world.
Located on the main highway running through Charleston, this bakery is a first stop for locals and people heading to the beach or to Shore Acres.
The owners, Lisa Peckham and Marvin Terry created Crabby Cakes Bakery, LLC with the idea it would be a destination for those who enjoy scrumptious baked goodies. Lisa has over 30 years of experience as a baker and pastry Chef and Marvin has over 12 years’ experience as a Chef.
Towards the end of 2012 they found themselves unemployed and decided it was time to open their own bakery. They had owned a bakery before and understood the demands required to operate a successful business in the food industry.
Lisa and Marvin had been saving for several years in preparation to move forward with their own bakery and the layoff they gave them the opportunity. Lisa states that, “when she found herself unexpectedly unemployed she knew it was time to start her bakery and turned to the SBDC for help.” Lisa applied for the S.E.A. program through WorkSource Oregon and needed help putting her business plan together. “Without the help of Mary Loiselle as my counselor, walking me through the business plan and answering my numerous questions, I don’t believe we would be here today.”
Crabby Cakes Bakery was a name chosen to represent their fishing family heritage. They are 4th generation local Charleston fishing family with strong ties to the community.
They actually have a Mascot, a Crabby Cake. This yummy little crab is made of red velvet cake and buttercream frosting.
As Lisa says, “Customer service is most important to us both. Marvin is great with all our customers! We provide service and products for all ages with our cakes, desserts, pastries and espresso as well as hot foods. Our goal is to keep top notch quality with all our products and top notch customer service.”
“Here we are, in our own shop, ahead of our business plan revenue projections for this point in our operation. We opened our door March 22, 2013 and had a really successful summer.”
Lisa and Marvin’s current project is to help the local community by selling bakery ornaments that they make, to put on their Christmas tree. Each ornament costs $1.00 and all the money they make will be donated to the Charleston Church Dinner on Christmas day. Each year the local Charleston Church feeds dinner to over eight-hundred people.
Lisa says, “We are now looking forward to a successful year and planning for next summer’s weddings, events, and influx of tourists. The SBDC has been the foundation that helped our business from day one! Mary is a great teacher as well as a wealth of knowledge to help us achieve our business goals. The best!!!”
