Chemeketa Community College SBDC
Raised in Illinois, Don Lundberg is a recent transplant to Oregon (2008). Since then, he has been an Adjunct Instructor at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. Teaching in the Management area, his courses have included Introduction to Business, Business Management Principles, and Human Resources Management.
Don has an MBA and a BA in Economics both from Stanford University. Between those two degrees he was an officer in the Pacific Fleet Navy (Vietnam Era)—serving as a Gunnery Assistant on a destroyer and as the Operations Officer in a decommissioning harbor mine sweeper squadron. During and after graduate school, he was in the Naval Reserves with a transportation and shipping unit.
After graduate school, Don worked in the Small Business Division of an international CPA firm in San Francisco. During that time he was an auditor, completed corporate and personal tax returns, and assisted in setting up and improving accounting systems.
In 1975 he moved back to his hometown where he became Controller (Chief Accountant) at a small community bank. Over the next 32 years he was also the Internal Auditor, Compliance Officer, Direc-tor of Human Resources, VP & Cashier (responsible for all the day-to-day operations, other than lend-ing), and Executive Vice President (special projects regarding those nasty “toxic assets”). He took early retirement in 2007, consulted with the bank for a year, and then headed west.
While he was at the bank, he taught part-time at the local community college in many areas: Account-ing, Financial Management, Economics, and all areas of Management. Since all the classes were evening courses, he had the benefit of learning a lot from the entrepreneurs and business owners who took his classes.
Also, in his early years at the bank, he hung out his shingle and offered CPA services to local busi-nesses by helping with bookkeeping, reports, tax returns, and other business issues. At the same he a computer-guru friend started a computerized bookkeeping service for local businesses and organi-zations. When his friend decided to move on, Don decided that he could have more of an impact on people and the community by focusing on the bank rather than his business and so wound both busi-nesses down.
A father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and husband, Don spends a lot of time trying to stay con-nected with family throughout the country. He and his wife Deb enjoy traveling, reading, walking (including the Portland Marathon), and spending time with friends. He also serves on the Mission Committee at his church and volunteers at Habitat for Humanity and Oregon Garden.
